Transitioning from primary to secondary school marks a significant milestone in your daughters’ educational journey. Secondary school offers expanded choice, enriched learning experiences and a myriad of opportunities for personal growth. However, we understand the blend of excitement and apprehension that comes with this transition.
At MLC, facilitating a smooth transition is a priority, and we believe in proactive collaboration between our dedicated teachers, staff and families to ensure this step is seamless. However, preparation for secondary school can begin well before your daughter even walks through out gates. Here are proactive steps you can take to support your daughter:
- Encourage independence: Begin fostering independence by encouraging your daughter to take on increased responsibilities at home, such as organising her school materials or creating her own schedule for homework.
- Open communication: Discuss the upcoming changes with your daughter, reassuring her that mixed emotions are normal. Encourage open dialogue and remind her it's okay to seek help when needed.
- Stay positive and supportive: Your attitude towards the transition will greatly influence your daughters’ outlook. Remain positive, offer encouragement, and celebrate her achievements. Your support will boost her confidence and help her embrace the changes ahead.
- Familiarise her with the new environment: Before starting at MLC, your daughter will have opportunities to visit the College and meet her Head of School, teachers and peers. Our Enrolment Experience and Orientation activities are designed to ensure your daughter can build familiarisation and confidence in her new environment. It's important that you attend these events.
What does transition look like at MLC?
When transitioning from primary school to secondary school, small everyday activities and check-ins help students adapt to change. In MLC Junior Secondary School, Mentor Groups – an update on the traditional ‘homegroup model’ – play a crucial role in setting students up for success by providing a safe space to develop peer relationships and gain confidence in navigating the challenges of their first year.
Importantly within the Mentor Group model, each student’s Mentor oversees the wellbeing of their students and serve as key points of contact for parents, should there be any questions or concerns. Mentor Group sessions also introduce toolkits of resources that support students’ learning and growth.
Additionally, every student participates in personalized one-on-one meetings with their Mentor. These sessions focus on regular goal setting and reflection, providing essential support and guidance as students transition into and progress through secondary school. Mentor educators are specially trained and only have twelve students each, ensuring the ability to develop authentic, supportive relationships with their students.
MLC offers additional programs like our Year 11 Peer Mentor program and Setting Up for Success Week, which provide extra support and help students familiarise themselves with the College, ensuring they establish connections with staff and peers.
Transitioning to secondary school is a significant step in your daughter’s educational journey. At MLC, we are committed to providing a nurturing and supportive environment to help her thrive. By working together, we can ensure that this transition is a positive and enriching experience for your daughter and your family.
